There's Magic In The Man! Steven Hinton Wins Reno 2013 (In Voodoo)

(click pic for hi-res)  Steven Hinton wins Reno Unlimited Gold in the P-51 Voodoo!

I rushed to get this hi-res pic of Steven Hinton in Voodoo posted - it's from the Gold Unlimited race and I captured it less then an hour and a half ago from pylon 2 out on the course! This pic is from an earlier lap in the race, not the final lap, but it is from the Gold race.

Congratulations Steven Hinton and the entire Voodoo crew!

Matt Jackson took second place in Strega and Sherman Smoot raced fast to third place in Czech Mate. It was a great week and a great day of racing. More pix and info after I make the loooong drive back to Indiana : )

CoolPix: Precious Metal Shining In The Sun (Reno 2013)

(click pic for hi-res)  Precious Metal in the sunshine getting lots of TLC before more racing

I was able to capture this unique CoolPix of Precious Metal in the pit getting some serious work done on the engine... no major problems there, just lots of fine tuning to get as much out of this 'spare' engine as possible. I decided this was a better pic than yesterday's pylon pix for right now, especially since it was taken about an hour ago, plus it's a lot easier to get one pic up during the day!

Steve Hinton with Voodoo has been well collected after posting the fastest qualifying time this year, as has the Sea Fury 232 with Hoot Gibson who qualified faster than a Sea Fury ever has at just under 480 mph. The Rare Bear crew and pilot Stewart Dawson have been battling issues making all the power it should be able to, and Strega with Matt Jackson has been working its way up from the back of the pack after having the setback of losing the canopy several days ago and spending time making the repairs. Strega easily won its race earlier today tho and I believe will race tomorrow to try to earn its place in the big race.

The Gold race for tomorrow is definitely shaping up!

Friday Morning At The 50th Anniversary Races: Reno 2013 (8 Pix)

(click pic to enlarge) T-33 Pace aircraft with home pylon in background before sunrise

Between having to work Wednesday until noon (when I had hoped to hit the road at 6am), the 35 hour road trip from Indiana to Reno, and then nagging internet access and Adobe Creative Cloud subscription issues, getting a post up from Reno has been a real challenge! So, I'm trying to play catch-up now... here's a small collection of images from Friday morning that I had hoped to have posted by noon yesterday. If things go well I will have more of Friday up a little later today. Reno!

Reno Week Begins As Precious Metal Sneaks In Under The Wire

Precious Metal in her new paint for the 50th Reno Air Races  (photo: facebook)

Qualifying at the 50th anniversary Reno Air Races begins today, and fortunately for Thom Richard (and his Precious Metal P-51) he arrived from Florida just in time yesterday to be eligible to race. The combination of his race engine failing in a recent ground run, the time needed to build up a useable last-minute replacement engine, and weather that wasn't safe to make the journey from Florida all ran the clock right down to the wire!

But he's there now and joining Steven Hinton who this year is flying the P-51 Voodoo, Matt Jackson in the P-51 Strega, Stewart Dawson in the F8 Bearcat Rare Bear and Hoot Gibson in the Sea Fury 232 to round out the flashy side of the Unlimited Warbird Racing Class. The full UWRC line-up for Reno 2013 can be seen at this link, and as always with racing, you never know who will come out on top! And of course there are the Formula One, Biplanes, Sport, T-6 and Jet classes as well... it's gonna be a huge week! Actual racing begins on Wednesday and then runs thru Sunday.

I'm leaving Indiana Wednesday morning to drive all the way out to Reno and hope to arrive Thursday afternoon. It's a 33 hour drive plus fuel stops and a 5-hour sleep. I push hard and hope to arrive 38 hours after I depart! Once there I'll be fetching up some great pix to share with you, but you can also experience the races via the LiveAirShowTV internet broadcast that runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Click here for the live boroadcast, or check out LiveAirShowTV.com for more info. You can also get details later in the week on the LiveAirShowTV facebook page.

Video: Another Supersonic SpaceShipTwo Test - Commercial Flights In 2014!

AirPigz is all about avgeek diversity, which is why I can go from antique airplanes in the two previous posts to aerospace sub-orbital supersonic testing in the next. My theory has always been that a real love for flight finds the same fascination in both extremes. I hope you agree : )

Virgin Galactic is moving closer to commercial service, now planning to start sometime in 2014. Get your deposits in asap my friends as there are apparently over 600 passengers booked ahead of you!

Here's the Virgin Galactic update on yesterday's successful flight:

Company Demonstrates All Technical Mission Phases in Single Flight for the First Time, Confirms On Track to Commence Commercial Service in 2014

September 5, 2013  MOJAVE, Calif. – Today, Virgin Galactic, the world’s first commercial spaceline owned by Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group and Abu Dhabi’s aabar InvestmentsPJS, successfully completed the second rocket-powered, supersonic flight of its passenger carrying reusable space vehicle, SpaceShipTwo (SS2). In addition to achieving the highest altitude and greatest speed to date, the test flight demonstrated the vehicle’s full technical mission profile in a single flight for the first time, including a high altitude deployment of the unique wing “feathering” re-entry mechanism. All of the test objectives were successfully completed.

At approximately 8 a.m. local time from the Mojave Air and Space Port, the company’s WhiteKnightTwo (WK2) carrier aircraft took off carrying SS2 to an altitude of 46,000 feet. Virgin Galactic Chief Pilot Dave Mackay was at the WK2 controls, assisted by Scaled Composites (Scaled) co-pilot Mike Alsbury and The Spaceship Company Flight Test Engineer Scott Glaser. Upon release from WK2, SS2 pilots Mark Stucky and Clint Nichols, both of Scaled, ignited the rocket motor for the planned 20-second burn propelling the spaceship to 69,000 feet. During this time, SS2 achieved a maximum speed of Mach 1.43. SS2 landed in Mojave at 9.25 a.m. local time completing the flight test with the pilots reporting a flawless flight.

Chairman of aabar Investments PJS, H.E. Khadem Al Qubaisi, commented: “This flight milestone represents a key step forward for the Virgin Galactic team. The successful completion of all major aspects of the flight mission demonstrates that we are very close to achieving one of Galactic’s key goals: commercialising access to space for the broader public. I would like to congratulate the whole team on their continued success.”

“We couldn’t be more delighted to have another major supersonic milestone under our belts as we move toward a 2014 start of commercial service,” said Virgin Galactic Founder Sir Richard Branson. “It was particularly thrilling to see for the first time today the whole elegant system in action during a single flight, including the remarkable feathering re-entry system. It was this safety feature more than anything else that originally persuaded us that the overall design of the system was uniquely fit for purpose. Everything we have seen today just confirms that view. Congratulations to all involved!”

“Today, we expanded the SpaceShipTwo rocket-powered flight test envelope with a longer burn duration and robust testing of the feather mechanism, supersonic aerodynamics and wing lift structure,” said Virgin Galactic CEO George Whitesides. “Each powered flight of SpaceShipTwo yields cumulative progress that builds the foundation for safe and exciting commercial space flights.”

Antique Airfield: Antiques, In The Air! (10 Pix)

(click any pic to enlarge)

Cabin Waco flying over Antique Airfield last Saturday evening August 31, 2013

I've got a boatload of pix from my weekend trip to the Antique Airplane Association fly-in at Antique Airfield near Blakesburg Iowa, but with my day-job's hectic schedule right now, I don't have a lot of time for prepping and posting. So I'm not gonna say much here... but I figure getting these pix up where they can be enjoyed is what really matters. This is just a slice of what I have to share over the next few months. There aren't really any incredible images here, but they are decent captures of some truly beautiful airplanes. (I worked and hour and a half before work and another hour and a half during lunch to get these prepped up for you!)

The atmosphere at Antique Airfield is something you just have to experience to understand. If you feel any love at all for old airplanes, then I suggest you consider joining the AAA before next year's event and then get yourself over there to see what it's all about! Better yet, ditch some your thoughts about modern airplanes and find a sweet old antique that needs your affection and find out what real flying is all about. Maybe you'll be one of the people I'm taking pix of next year (and hopefully I'll have flown in with an old airplane myself : )

Antique Airfield... Heaven On Earth! (AAA Fly-In 8.31.13 13 Pix)

(click pic to enlarge)  Ryan SC-W in front of the official Antique Airfield Hangar

The 2013 Antique Airplane Association fly-in runs thru Monday September 2nd in Blakesburg Iowa... it's the most amazing collection of antique airplanes, and I made the drive over Friday to experience it again. I'll add that I made a swing down thru Indianapolis on the way Friday to go flying with Billy Werth in his Pitts S2C. I'm getting really close to having my financial problems of the last 5 years behind me, so some bartered time in the Pitts doing takeoffs and landings was a great way to knock of the rust of of my taildragger skills! I actually did really well and look forward to getting myself current before long in a Cub or something similar. I also hope to keep moving forward in the Pitts with both aerobatics and fine tuning the landing experience.

So, the AAA fly-in on Saturday was near perfect, especially if almost 100 degree weather makes you happy. For most of us the heat was a bit much, but the winds were light with loads of sunshine, and the collection of antique airplanes was magnificent. There was plenty of flying going on all day, but by evening the sky was crowded with beautiful old airplanes making the sweetest music there is. The following is a quick post of some of the images I captured in the earlier part of the day... it should give you a good idea of what you're missing if you aren't here! (13 pix, be sure to click thru to see them all)
