Oshkosh Pix #3: Tuesday 7.26.11 - A Perfect Day (14 Pix)

Tuesday morning started very early for me as I joined a handful of other fine folks with cameras at about 5am to get images of Warbirds at dawn. It was a perfect morning for it with still air, an excellent temperature, and some really fabulous clouds in the sky. For my first time out on a 'Dawn Patrol' I thought I got some great images. The following are some of the best ones. And, even of you aren't big into photography, I highly recommend you get up early like this sometime and experience beautiful airplanes in the light of a rising sun. It's awesome.

After leaving the warbird area I moved south down the flightline. The Breezy was out nice and early getting started with giving rides. I've got hundreds of hours flying a Breezy, so it always makes me really happy seeing others enjoy this very unique flying machine.

I met up with my cousin Bill Gunn from Texas for lunch. We've only recently made contact after having not seen each other since I was a kid about 40 years ago. We had lunch and really enjoyed catching up. We also discussed some very interesting details concerning a WWII story involving his father. I'll be sharing a lot of this story in the future.

Our time together also covered more about Mike O'Sullivan and his 90% scale Spitfire. Bill Gunn has been involved in a variety of ways to help Mike move his Supermarine Aircraft company from Australia to Texas. I stopped by to get more pix of the Spitfire with the focus on the cockpit. The view looking out over the 430 hp LS2 engine certainly looks impressive!

Tuesday also marked the fabulous return of the Commemorative Air Force's B-29 FIFI to Oshkosh. I have lots of memories of seeing her here going back many years, so it's obviously an incredible treat to see her back again. Far more important is what this aircraft represents for both those who made her and those who fought in WWII. May we never forget the sacrifices of so many brave and courageous people.

My wife and I were there when FiFi landed and I must say I had goosebumps. It had been a long time since I saw her last. Was right there as they pulled her into her parking spot still dripping oil...People were all over and under her taking pictures of every inch :) Very Cool!! Thanks Martt for the great pictures..
